Indulge Us: Does Social Media Space Need Regulation?

Anew proposal has landed on the desks of the National Assembly. This proposed legislation aims to revamp the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Act, CAPL11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, ushering in a new era of regulatory oversight in the age of social media dominance.

At the helm of this push for regulatory reform is Balarabe Ilelah, the Director-General of NBC, who has characterized social media as a "monster" during a meeting with Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation.

Ilelah underscored the urgency of this bill, citing the current lack of legal provisions empowering NBC to effectively oversee and regulate social media platforms. He explained that the existing law does not provide NBC with the authority to oversee and regulate social media platforms.

Local media outlets have reported that in 2023 alone, NBC issued 1,238 warnings, and six different stations faced penalties for violations of existing regulations. These statistics underscore the magnitude of the regulatory challenges faced by NBC, particularly in the context of the rapidly evolving digital landscape.


Does Social Media Space require Regulation?

In light of these developments, the question arises, does social media space truly require regulation? On one hand, proponents of regulation argue that oversight is necessary to curb misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful content proliferating on social media platforms. They contend that regulation would provide a framework for accountability and ensure that social media platforms operate in the public interest.
